2019 Awesome Con EXCLUSIVE: Kevin Sorbo Talks HERCULES, XENA, & Sword & Sandal Shows in Pop
Unlike the flickering existence of the western genre in pop culture, one particular genre that has consistently stood the test of time is that of "sword and sandal." If you're unfamiliar with it, in essence, it involves characters set in ancient or biblical times, who often contend with mythological elements - gods, monsters, etc. - with just their wit and a sword. These days, shows such as Spartacus or Game of Thrones use these tropes to great effect; however, long before the devious Cersei or the largely than life Mother of Dragons, the shows which most embodies these qualities, was Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. As the name suggests, the show followed the heroic exploits of its title Greek mythological demi-god. Seeing how the genre has continued to flourish presently, I asked it's star, Kevin Sorbo, what he feels could be attributed to its longevity. Check out conversation on the topic below....
